The One Where Sofia Discusses Her Love For Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

So it is no surprise to anyone that I love Bollywood movies(if you don’t know this have you been reading my blog or twitter at all over the past few months?) and anyone who knows me in real life will know my immense love for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. So today I am here to tell you all about why I love this film so much and where this love came from. This post is inspired by a post I made last year titled the One Where Sofia Discusses Her Love for Friends and another post I made called The One Where Sofia Discusses Her Love for McBusted and McFly so I thought I’d make it into a recurring thing where I tell you all about my obsessions.

I think that in order to understand why I love this film so much, I must first tell you the background behind me and KKKG(I’m going to refer to it as this throughout because the title is just too long for me to keep repeating). This film came out while I was two and while I was probably way too young to be watching it, I grew up watching this film. My dad grew up in Pakistan so he has grown up watching these Hindi movies. Thus, they’re basically always on in our house. When I first saw Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham properly when I was around 6, I fell in love with it. I loved how extravagant everything was. The beautiful clothes, the dancing, the singing, all of it. I was always teased by my family for my love for one particular song called Bole Chudiyan(The Bangles Say) but I loved it. This song in particular was always my favourite scene in the movie for many reasons. Mainly because it is the biggest dance scene in the film and everyone is in fancy clothes looking particularly fabulous. I used to play this song again and again and learn the dance to it.

As a child, I loved this film because of the songs and the clothes. However as I grew older I learned to appreciate the story a lot more and I fell in love with it even more. The story follows the Raichand family who have 2 sons, Rahul and Rohan. Rahul is an adopted son but they give him a lot of love. The dad owns a major company and he focuses a lot on respect and family. Therefore, when Rahul falls in love with a commoner, Anjali and wants to marry her, he is angry and he kicks him out. 10 years later when Rohan learns this story, he goes to London to find his brother and unite his family once again. Obviously this story focuses a lot on family and that’s one thing I love. This immense love that they all have for each other is just beautiful.

Another thing that KKKG focuses on is gender equality. The mother, Nandini, is constantly being kept quiet throughout by her husband as that is what a wife is supposed to do. Therefore, she lets him kick her son out because in the Indian culture, they believe that the husband is always right. I love the fact that Karan Johar, the director and screenplay writer, is criticizing the Indian culture in many ways as another thing the film focuses on is the divide between the social classes.

On top of all this, it has a love story. Not just one actually, two. In the first half, we get to watch Rahul fall in love with Anjali which I absolutely love. They are definitely one of my OTPs. I love the process of them falling in love as I love both characters seperately, especially Anjali. They also have some great songs and scenes in general. I particularly love the song called Yeh Ladka Hai Allah(This Boy, Oh Lord!) simply because it just summarises their love story.

As well as this we get the love story of Rohan and Pooja(or Poo as she likes to be called) in the second half. This love story is a lot more fun and light hearted which is a good thing because after having hefty, emotional scenes, the comedy was necessary. Both characters are quite modern and their love story contrasts the love story between Rahul and Anjali. Poo was my favourite character when I was younger because I wanted to be her. She was so fashionable and sassy however now that I’m older, I want to be more like Anjali.

With Bollywood movies, I don’t just want a film with a brilliant story in it. It also needs fabulous songs and KKKG definitely does not fail in that department. All the songs are unique and different but I love them all. I’ve already mentioned my favourite song when I was younger and Yeh Ladka Hai Allah which is my current favourite song on the soundtrack but I love all of them. Say Shava Shava is a brilliant song to dance to, Suraj Hua Maddham is a beautiful love song and You Are My Soniya is just a great fun poppy song. I love all the songs in it and the dancing as well. Karan Johar does not make the mistake of focusing mainly on the story and forgetting about the music.

Karan Johar is a god at storytelling. The way he tells the story is just amazing. I love everything about the story and the way it was written. You will be crying your eyes out one second and then 10 minutes later you will be crying with laughter. No matter how many times I watch this film, it will always make me teary eyed.

KKKG srk cry

How could I have come this far and not have mentioned the actors? Everyone was worried when this movie came out because all of the main 6 characters were played by big stars. The parents are played by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan who are brilliant actors who have both been in the movie business for years. Rahul is played by Shah Rukh Khan(my favourite Bollywood actor) who is referred to as King Khan and is one of the biggest actors in the business and Anjali is played by Kajol(my favourite Bollywood actress) who is also one of the biggest actresses in the business. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are one of Bollywood’s power couples(on screen, they aren’t together in real life) as they have starred in many movies as the main couple, all of which have gone on to be big blockbuster hits.  Rohan and Pooja are played by Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor who were big debut stars just before KKKG and are some of the biggest names in the business now.

I have too many KKKG gifs...

Have I gone on for too long? Probably. Most of my followers will probably not read this post but I just had so many feelings that I had to get out and what better way to do it then through my blog. Am I too obsessed with this film? Definitely. But I just thought I’d explain my obsession to you guys because why not?
