I don’t know if it has escaped your knowledge but I love Bollywood movies. Obviously Bollywood is a very large category so I haven’t seen a lot of them. But I thought I’d recommend some of my favourites to you guys. Here are just a few of my favourites in chronological order of when they came out. If you click on the title of the movie, it should take you to the IMDB page so that you can find out more about it.
This is the classic Bollywood love story in my opinion. This film is great. The title translates to The Lover Will Take The Bride Away and that just sums up what the film is about. This movie created a buzz in India and it is actually still in some Indian cinemas today, 20 years after its original release. It’s a brilliant story with great acting and amazing songs. It’s extremely popular simply because it is just amazing.
This film marked the directorial debut of Karan Johar who is quite possibly my favourite director. He directed this movie as well as writing the story and screenplay. The title means Something Happens which is quite vague but it is basically a love triangle. The first half is set during their college years whereas the second half is set when they are 8 years older. This movie is just superb. The direction is spot on as is the dialogue and the music. The acting is also amazing as it stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol who appear in quite a lot of these movies and are just great actors. This is a very strong recommendation.
This is my favourite movie of all time. I have extreme love for this movie for various reasons. This film is directed by Karan Johar(who I mentioned earlier) and it has a star studded cast with the 6 main cast members being extremely big actors. The title translates to Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness which is exactly what you will feel while watching it. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. The plot is hard to explain but know that it has a strong focus on family, love, gender equality and social class. It deals with a lot of issues and it’s just amazing. It has amazing songs that you will not be able to get out of your head. STRONGLY RECOMMEND.
Kal Ho Naa Ho(translation: Tomorrow May or May Not Come) will make you cry. A lot. I cannot get through this movie without crying which is unusual for me as I never cry. Written and produced by Karan Johar, KHNH tells the story of a family that are falling to pieces as the dad has committed suicide and the mother and grandmother will not stop arguing. In comes Aman who acts as an angel to them and helps them to love life again including getting the girl Naina to fall in love with her best friend, Rohit. It may seem to be quite simple but it is so much more than that. It is a great story and it also has great actors and amazing songs. I highly recommend this film.
You’ll probably need another film to cheer you up so in comes Hum Tum(translation:Me and You). This film is based off of When Harry Met Sally and it follows two people who hate each other when they first meet but as they keep meeting over time, they begin to fall for each other. It is just a fun cute film that will make you smile and laugh. It also has some great morals and it’s great for feminism.
So after that you’re probably wanting something more serious right? Veer Zaara(the names of the characters so no translation) is the best film to watch next. This film tells the story of two lovers, Veer and Zaara who meet in India when she comes to scatter her grandmas ashes but as she goes back to Pakistan, their love story experiences a lot of issues. Their story is just amazing and the love they have for each other will blow you away. Directed by Yash Chopra, this film is incredibly serious and may reduce you to tears. Be warned.
Salaam Namaste is a film that is so different to anything I have ever seen before. It is about two Indians who live in Australia. They meet and fall in love as per usual but then she becomes pregnant and he wants nothing to do with the baby. Pregnancy and fathers who don’t want children are topics that are hardly touched in Bollywood and I loved the way that this film dealt with it. It was an entertaining film and it still had your typical Bollywood love story at the start as well as singing and dancing but it is also so much more than that and that’s what I loved.
This is one of those movies that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. It follows the story of a very famous race car driver who after a crash, loses his job and he becomes poor along with his wife and two kids. It follows them trying to work out how to survive without money and it’s just an amazing movie. It is an uplifting story filled with a lot of happy moments but also with sad moments. It has great songs and the young kids in this film will blow you away with their great acting.
This is another Shah Rukh Khan film that is about an ex hockey player who is hated by India as he caused them to lose the world cup. Years later, he comes back to coach the women’s hockey team and to help them win for the first time. It’s a great film that shows the gender inequality in India so well as well as having great acting(I mean it’s Shah Rukh Khan, of course it has brilliant acting in it).
This is a film that will entertain you greatly. It is about a depressed businessman who meets a care-free woman and becomes highly involved in her life with her family. It has so many twists and turns and it will just keep you interested throughout. It is also a great film for feminism and mental health as well plus it’s now on Netflix!
This is a great love story that will make you smile and laugh. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi(translation: God Made This Couple) follows a guy called Suri who marries a woman who does not love him back. He then goes along to her dance classes under disguise and over time, she begins to fall in love with this new him without realising that it is him. It sounds silly and it is but that’s the best thing about it. It is entertaining and it will make you laugh while also being incredibly romantic as Suri has this undying love for his wife.
This film is hilarious. It follows three friends who are going through engineering school and they are all labelled as idiots. One of them shows the other two how to live a care free life and to not give a crap about what people think. It is a hilarious family comedy film that never fails to make me laugh. Whilst also being absolutely hilarious, it will also make you feel a range of different emotions and you will just fall in love with the main three characters. It will also teach you all that college is not the most important thing in the world.
I just had to add this film to the list. This film is a romantic drama about a Muslim man who has Asperger’s Syndrome and lives in America. Due to his disability and his religion, after 9/11 he is constantly accused of being a terrorist and everybody hates him. Therefore he decides to go on a journey to meet the president and tell him ‘My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist’. This film broke me into millions of little pieces because it is just very sad however uplifting as well.
This film is one that I watched on Netflix (sadly been recently taken off) and fell in love with. Band Baaja Baaraat(translation: Bands Horn and Revelry) follows two wedding planners who run an incredibly successful business but then love gets in the way and chaos ensues. It is a sweet, fun and romantic movie that will just make you smile. As well as this, it has very good songs that will get you singing along. The acting is superb as is the directing so I highly recommend this one if you want to have a lot of fun.
This title translates into You Will Never Meet Life Again(It sounds cooler in Hindi but it’s basically the Hindi version of YOLO!) and it is about three friends who go on a road trip around Spain to celebrate the bachelor party of one of them. It is about them rediscovering their friendship and the meaning of life. It is brilliant. I loved the aspect of Spain and also I loved that it was mainly about friendship. We need more films about friendship please.
This is definitely not your typical Bollywood film. It follows a mute man, an autistic girl and their friend as they all go through life discovering the fact that love cannot be contained by society’s views of normal. It’s amazing. The acting in it is just superb because the roles were so hard and the actors have portrayed them perfectly. Bollywood’s foray into showing off mental illness well worked.
This movie is quite modern and different. Produced by Karan Johar, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani(translation:This Youth is Crazy) follows a group of friends who go on a trip and it then follows them years later as they all meet again for a wedding. It is a love story mainly but it’s also a great movie about discovering who you are and what is important to you. The songs are great and the acting is as well as the story. It’s an incredibly uplifting movie that will make you happy.
This is a film about a girl who decides to go on her honeymoon on her own after her fiancee calls off their engagement days before their wedding. On her honeymoon, she meets new people and learns a lot about herself. It is an amazing film that will keep you entertained throughout as the main character does many silly things however it will also show you that there is much more to life than just love and marriage. Also the Russian guy in the film is very hot and very adorable and you can watch it on Netflix!
This film is a modern twist on DDLJ(see above). It follows a girl who goes to Delhi to buy a designer outfit for her wedding but falls in love with another guy whilst there. I really like this film because it’s another one of those cute and adorable Bollywood rom coms. The two main actors, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, have quickly become two of my favourite actors because they are just so cute whilst also being great actors. I definitely recommend this film if you like cute rom coms (It is on Netflix)
This follows an alien who comes down to Earth and asks the questions that no one thinks to ask and challenges people’s beliefs, especially about religion. I really enjoyed this film. It is well known as one of the best Bollywood movies ever made and I agree. Rajkumar Hirani films are always a lot of fun but with a key message that you’ll take away from it. I didn’t love this one as much as I loved 3 Idiots but it’s still very good. Aamir Khan is a fantastic actor who plays PK so well. Anushka Sharma was amazing and so was Sushant Singh Rajput. The one way that this did beat 3 Idiots was the romance. The romance in 3 Idiots was terrible and the worst part about it. In this film, it’s so cute and adorable. It made me smile a lot.
I was wary of this film as I don’t like the main actor but I ended up completely loving it. It is about a mute Pakistani girl who gets lost in India and a guy who helps her to try and get back to Pakistan. It is a heart warming and lovely story that will make you smile throughout. Everyone in my family loves it and you all will too. It’s an amazing film that everyone needs to watch.
This film is based on the true story of an air hostess who saved the lives of 359 people after the flight was hijacked by terrorists. It’s such a great film. It’s heart-wrenching and tense but a perfect tribute to a real life hero. Sonam Kapoor did her career best performance in this film as Neerja, who was definitely a memorable character.
This film follows a dysfunctional family as they try to figure out all of their problems. That’s a very generic description but believe me, this film is much more than that. I was definitely expecting to like this film but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. Everything about it was great. It perfectly deals with a range of issues and will give you an emotional rollercoaster. It is also a great mix of modern day life and the classic Bollywood family-style movies that I love. You know it’s a great film when even 2 months on, you can’t stop thinking about it. Also gotta love a bit of Fawad Khan. And Alia Bhatt. And Sidharth Malhotra. And Rishi Kapoor. BASICALLY THE CAST OF THIS FILM IS FANTASTIC. It’s definitely my favourite movie of 2016 so far so watch it.
This film follows a 10 year old girl and her blind 8 year old brother who set out on a journey alone to go find Shah Rukh Khan as they believe that he can help her brother get his sight back. It’s an incredibly cute and heart-warming film about the strong relationship between a sister and brother. It will make you feel a range of emotions but overall it will make you feel happy and hopeful about life in general. This film is also now on Netflix!
This film follows Kaira who is going through a lot of emotional problems and having mental breakdowns so she decides to seek professional help from a pyschologist, who teaches her to love her life in unconventional ways. I really really loved this film. Mental health is such a stigma around the globe and I like how Bollywood films are beginning to talk about it. Alia Bhatt was absolutely god damn amazing in her role as Kaira. Her breakdowns felt so realistic and her panic attacks seemed like the ones that I have sometimes gone through. She had a 5 minute monlogue scene in which she broke down in her therapist’s office and it was so amazing that it even lead me to tears. She was so good that she outshone Shah Rukh Khan who plays her therapist. SRK was obviously his usual charming adorable self but he was definitely outshone by Alia’s god damn perfect acting skills. Look out Bollywood, Alia Bhatt is going to become the next big powerhouse.
These are my top Bollywood recommends. Obviously, there are a lot more films and this is just my personal opinion but I feel like these are some of the best films to start off with if you want to get into Bollywood. I will be updating this page as I watch new films that I think you guys would love.
